The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has completed tunnelling work on one tunnel below the Mithi river for the Colaba-BandraSeepz Metro 3 corridor. Work on the second tunnel is in progress and the breakthrough is expected soon.
“The tunnelling on the 1,500m stretch between BKC and Dharavi is complete. The work on this stretch began on June 6, 2019,” said an MMRC spokesperson. The MMRC has set December 2021 as the deadline to commission the first phase between BKC and Cuffe Parade.
It has completed 41% of the work on the BKC station, which is being built under the Mithi river. The MMRC has deployed “Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machines”, which are used specially for operations in soft ground conditions containing water under pressure.
